The Christmas story has a lot to teach us about the human condition.
* Jesus and his family were immigrants in a foreign land. They traveled to Bethlehem for a gov't-ordered census. * They were offered refuge there. What might this teach us about how immigrants, foreigners or strangers should be treated? * Jesus had a great legacy, yet the Christmas story tells us he came from meager (born in a stable) and socially- stigmatized (Joseph was not his biological father and he was not married to Mary, yet) beginnings. Perhaps this shows us that we don't have to be defined by our beginnings or our history. Also, family can be defined based on who provides you the support you need or whose values align with yours. Lastly, society may have looked oddly upon Joseph accepting the role of Father, but the joke was on them because he adopted a King! So maybe this tells us not to let society dictate our values or love when it comes to parenting. * News of Mary's pregnancy could've broken up Mary and Joseph's engagement (he knew he and Mary had never laid together 😳). Perhaps this tells us to know and trust our partner, regardless of those who gossip on the outside. * The first to visit Jesus, and honor his greatness, were working-class folks (shepherds). Maybe this tells us to respect others, regardless of their occupation. * The next to visit were wise men from a foriegn land. However, they had humility and recognized the need to worship Jesus. So, no matter our social status, humility has its place. The wise men's wisdom alerted them to the fact that King Herod meant the baby Jesus harm. They went back home a different way to avoid having to tell Herod where Jesus was. Perhaps this highlights the significance of wisdom, insight, and awareness, or maybe the importance of making empathic decisions. As you celebrate this holiday, what value will you find in the story of Jesus' birth? Share your thoughts in the comments. |
